Pizza & Wine Pairings!
We believe there are just two ways to make pizza better, one by adding bacon and second would be selecting the right wine to drink with it.
Pizza is essentially bread and melted cheese, two things which pair very well with wines. The addition of a tomato base brings in lots of acidity, which becomes the key to pairing wines. With high acidity, you want to avoid heavy tannins. While sparkling wines and some whites pair well with pizzas, its mostly red wines that almost always work well with pizzas. The most obvious partner to your pizza is Italian wine, so open up a medium body no fuss Chianti and you will never be disappointed. Zinfandels work well too, not heavily oaked ones but lighter an fruit forward styles. Pinot Noir is another great choice, specially with mushrooms as it compliments the earthy flavours very well.
Long story short, light to medium body red wines work well with most pizzas, which means you don’t need to spend too much on oaked or reserve wines. So next time, keep that beer away and open up a wine.
