The Perfect Screwdriver
It’s orange juice and vodka – what’s the big deal, you ask?
We don’t deny that it is one of the simplest cocktails out there to make, orange juice and vodka is all that it takes. Both these 2 core ingredients are always lying around the house. It is exactly its simplicity that gives you the ability to experiment with it. But first the basics.
Screwdriver is a rather young cocktail compared to some of the other classics. It was devised by American oil mine workers in the Middle East during the 1950s, who were looking to spruce up their orange juice. Vodka was an easy answer, being a colorless spirit. Since they didn’t have access to spoons, they just stirred it with a handy screwdriver and hence the name.
It’s all about the orange juice
For every 30 ml of vodka you need 60 ml of orange juice, a typical 1:2 ratio. If you follow this you will have the perfect balance between the citrus and alcohol kick.
While packaged juices are convenient, a little extra effort of making fresh orange juice will make all the difference. Not only does it taste better, it also has fruit pulp which adds texture to the drink. Even if you are getting packaged orange juice, look for ones which are denser.
The Right Vodka
As for any cocktail, you do not need go splurge on the vodka but do keep in mind that a Screwdriver is just a two ingredient cocktail. Hence a bottom shelf vodka will not work as is the case with any harsh vodka; a smooth vodka is a must. The best thing about a Screwdriver is its smoothness and a vodka plays a crucial role in it. So get a good vodka.
This a very easy drink considering you don’t have to shake it or stir it, you can build it in the glass itself. You can use either a tumbler or a highball glass, fill it up with ice, pour the ingredients, give it a quick stir and add the garnish.
For a simple drink the garnish is also simple. A slice of orange is more than enough to beautify the drink. You could also bruise some mint leaves and add that to the drink along with garnish.
If you want to add some jazz to a Screwdriver, we’d suggest adding 10-15 ml of Campari, depending on your tastes. It is a personal favorite of ours.
