Silver Screen Cocktails
There is something about the silver screen that catches our imagination like none other. We often find ourselves aspiring to be living those fascinating lives within the movies –sweep the leading lady of her feet, swashbuckle through unimaginable odds, reliving epic moments. But reality has other plans for us.
Never fear, just whip up one of these cocktails featured in some great films and relive your favorite movie moment.
If you are a 007 fan, the MI6 agent’s fascination for his tipples is hard to miss. Sean Connery as James Bond was offered the drink by the villain Dr Julius No in the film Dr No; it was No who first to uttered the words “Shaken, and not stirred.” Chances are that you might have said it to bartender at least once, while ordering a Martini. It is a simple enough version which replaces gin with vodka.
15 ml Vermouth
60 ml Vodka
Shake on ice and strain into a Martini glass. Garnish with lemon peel.
Vesper is just another extension of Bond’s beloved Martini. Named after his lady love, the drink featured in Casino Royale, the book and 2 films, uses gin and vodka with Kina Lillet – an aperitif wine – now known only as Lillet (lee-lay). There are debates about the success of the drink, but we’re just impressed by the creativity.
90 ml Gin
30 ml Vodka
15 ml Blanc Lillet
Shake on ice and strain in a deep Champagne goblet. Garnish with a lemon peel.
Carrie Bradshaw and her girl gang have raised this drink to a cult status. Both in the television series and two films, Cosmopolitan is the go-to drink for the four friends. The popularity reached such heights that the SATC gang stopped drinking them, when Miranda asks why they stopped drinking them Carrie quipped, “Because everyone else started.”
45 ml Vodka
30 ml Triple Sec
15 ml Fresh lime
15 ml Cranberry juice
Shake on ice and strain into a Martini glass. Garnish with an orange peel.
It’s The Dude’s favorite drink but he call it Caucasian. Jeff Bridges who plays The Dude/Jeff Lebowski is a middle aged slacker and bowling fan who is found with a glass White Russian on many a occasion in the film. This cult film revived the drink which is an extension from the Black.
45 ml Vodka
23 ml Coffee liqueur
23 ml Cream
Stir vodka and coffee liqueur in an old fashioned glass with ice and then gently pour in the cream.
While the film may not have made a mark, but the handsome Tom Cruise mastering flair behind the bar makes it worthwhile. Of the drinks the Tom Cruise-Bryan Brown duo keep whipping up the one that caught us was the unlikeliest one. The Red Eye is combination of ingredients that are best described as odd, but then The Red Eye is meant to cure a hangover.
30 ml Vodka
180 ml Chilled tomato juice
350 ml Beer
In a mug pour in the vodka and tomato juice, then pour in the beer and lastly crack open an egg into the mug. Do not stir.
It’s waiting for ice for Mint Juleps on a hot New York day that Tom Buchanan confronts Jay Gatsby. The cocktail is a recurring favorite in the film; it is traditionally served in pewter cups. But even before the book and film Mint Juleps has been favored drink of southern USA, the first mention of the drink is in 1803. It is simple enough to make as well.
90 ml Bourbon
1 teaspoon Sugar
In chilled glass put in the mint leaves and sugar; muddle the leaves. Put cracked ice in the glass, pour the bourbon and stir. Top it off with more ice and sprig of mint for garnish.
We have no idea what it tastes like or looks like but Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster is still the ‘best drink in existence’, deemed so by its inventor ex-president of the Universe, Zaphod Beeblebrox. The ingredients are obviously collected from all over the universe to create and if this drink were available on planet Earth it would be undoubtedly be potent and dangerous as Beeblbrox says, “Never drink more than two Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters unless you are a thirty ton mega elephant with bronchial pneumonia.”
1 bottle of Ol’Janx Spirit juice
1 measure of water from seas of Santraginus
3 cubes of Arcturan Mega-gin
4 litres of Fallian marsh gas
1 measure of Qalactin Hypermint extract poured over the back of silver spoon
A tooth of an Algolian Suntiger
Sprinkle of Zamphuor
If you manage to find these ingredients, carefully put them into a glass one after the other and garnish with the olive.
