Planeta La Segreta Bianco 2010
Sicily is home to some unique wines. Creating something even more unique is winery Planeta. They have mastered the art of blending indigenous and international varietals creating distinctive wines. The winery was set up in 1995 and thanks to their approach of wine making they have made a mark for themselves. The theory was simple – thoughtful marriage between grape variety and terroir.
They have 6 estates spread across the island – Sambuca di Sicilia, Capo Milazzo, Menfi, Vittoria, Noto and Etna. Their Menfi estate has two wineries Cantina Piccola where the red wines are made and Cantina Grande where the white blend La Segreta Bianco is produced as well as their rosé. The two vineyards Dispensa and Gurra together cover 440 acres of land with varied terroir and the winery has made efforts to plant vines suited to each of these micro-terroir.
La Segreta Bianco is a mix of Grecanico, Chardonnay, Viognier and Fiano, where Greciano and Chardonnay have the dominant role with 50% and 30% composition of the wine, respectively. The blend is designed to be fruity and fragrant, fresh and intense with a youthful character.
Nose: The wine has ceamy and buttery notes which are from the Chardonnay. There is floral and fruit notes, especially peach, as well as hints of hazelnuts.
Palate: The wine starts off with salty notes, there is a lot of minerality on the palate. The floral and fruity notes become prominent on the mid palate with peach taking the centre stage. It is quite a complex wine with a rounded oily texture and a medium finish.
