The original Oktoberfest, Munich, Germany
Munich, the capital of Bavaria in Germany is where the roots of Oktoberfest are. The first ever Oktoberfest took place when Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria married Princess Therese in 1810 and a grand horse race was held in a field on the edge of the city, the site has been known as Theresienwiese – and the Oktoberfest as the Wies’n. The festivities begin on the first Saturday after September 15, with the mayor of Munich tapping the first keg and yelling “O’zapft is!” With that a twelve-gun salute signals the bar staff to let the beer flow.
The 2013 Munich Oktoberfest will be the 180th Oktoberfest being held from September 21 to October 6, 2013.
