Mulled Wine Recipe
It’s that time of the year when it’s legit to drink warm wine. Mulled wine is festive, delicious and ridiculously simple to make. Essentially, it is red wine with spices and fruits, kind of a warm sangria but not quite. Lets get started!
2 bottles of red wine. Merlot works well but if you would like stronger flavors, get a Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz.
200 ml Apple juice
100 ml Cranberry juice
2 Cinnamon sticks
1 Teaspoon Nutmeg (about 8-10 gratings)
4 Star Anise
Serves 12 glasses | Takes 45 minutes to prepare
Take half a bottle of the wine and warm it on low flame in a sauce pan. Add some orange zest along with the rest of the orange and spices into the sauce pan and let them be on flame for 10 minutes. Substituting sugar with juice makes this recipe less syrupy and cranberry juice gives it that hint of tartness as well. Take the saucepan off the heat and let it sit for 30 minutes for all the flavors to come together. This is now a great base to play around with whatever flavors you would like. Fancy some more orange, add some Cointreau or you could just throw in a pod of vanilla. Want this to be a little more boozy, add some vodka. You get where I am going with this right?
Now add the rest of the wine to the sauce pan and keep on slow flame for 5 minutes and serve in glass mugs. The idea is not to cook all of the wine and not use high flame because more the heat, more the alcohol will burn off.
