Checkout Mirchi & Mime’s Cool New Wine List
Browsing through wine menus at restaurants is a hobby for us. So imagine our excitement when we found out that a restaurant in Mumbai has an extensive, innovative and fun wine menu. Mirchi & Mime based in Powai is intent on establishing itself as a destination for wine lovers in the city.
The wine list named The Story Book, has 31 wines from across the world, including 8 from India and is designed very similar to an illustrated children’s book. Wines by the glass at the restaurant start at Rs 375 excluding taxes.
Talking about the idea behind this format Prashant Issar, co-owner of Mirchi and Mime said, “The idea was to keep it simple yet interesting. Wine tastes different to different palates, for me wine tasting notes become irrelevant. I would rather trust the reason behind the presence of the label in the list to be more convincing.” It is all about memories that wine invokes and he considers it much stronger parameter for a wine selection than just tasting notes. “Clarity of thought always reflects on the product. It is important that wine lists, like food menus convey the integrity of the restaurant towards its offering to diners,” he adds.
Each of the wines listed The Story Book is illustrated with a short tale about the wine making it an interesting read for both connoisseurs and novice. The playful nature of the book can be deceptive but Issar assures that it is a serious wine list. “Each wine is there for a reason carefully selected from sea of distributors in Mumbai,” he adds.
Issar enlisted the help of Vaniitha Jaiin, a wine specialist, who had the task of tasting over 300 wines. For her it was about selecting the best set of wines to suit very taste. “The wine selection offers guests to find something interesting, something they recognize, and something that will make them feel like they made a good choice. It was truly a taste-test process that helped me to select a great range of wines to debunk the myths of pairing Wines with Indian dishes,” she explains. The book’s been illustrated by Pushan Chakravarty and designed by Lightlifters.
Mirchi & Mime has already made mark in the city by employing differently-abled staff, not just in the kitchen and back end but also as their service staff. The Story Book is also a hit – wine sales have been impressive, some diners want to buy the list and take it home as a memento and coffee table book, even people who do not order wine spend time reading it.
