Bira 91 White & Blonde
Bira 91, the name, would remind one of beers from Europe. It is a brand by Delhi based Cerana Beverages and though they are described as ‘Imagined in India’, they are currently brewed in Belgium and are imported into India.
According to Ankur Jain, CEO of Cerana Beverages, the entire production of these beers are slated to shift to India in 6 months; the transition is already in progress. Two variations – White and Blonde – are quite clearly chosen keeping in mind the average beer drinking Indian who is used to Indian lagers and imported wheat beers like Hoegaarden. It will be interesting to see if there will be any visible changes in taste of these beers once Cerana starts producing them in India.
Bira 91 White is a quintessential Belgian style Witbier. It has low bitterness but a lot of aromas, citrus and coriander being the prominent ones. These flavors are well integrated both on the nose and palate. There is also a hint of spice which comes across on the taste profile. The is pale golden but cloudy because of the wheat. It is smooth, refreshing and easy drinking as most wheat beers tend to be.
The good thing is that it is a step up from the commercial lagers that are available in India
Bira 91 Blonde, on the other hand, is a lager with distinctive bitterness. They’ve used hops grown in Himalayas for this one. It is a clear beer where the bitterness comes in right at the end. It is a very smooth and easy drinking beer. As far as lagers go this is typical lager – no-fuss and no complications. The good thing is that it is a step up from the commercial lagers that are available in India.
Bira 91 is available in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. It is priced at Rs 175 for White and Rs 150 for Blonde in both Delhi and Bangalore. In Mumbai, Bira 91 White is priced at Rs 130 and Bira 91 Blonde is priced at Rs 110.
