If your hands itch to get behind the bar and shake up some cocktails, who do you turn to? Art of mixing doesn’t seem very complicated and you can always follow age old recipes for classic cocktails floating around. Varun Sudhakar, India’s contender for Diageo World Class 2013, who also works at Four Seasons Mumbai learnt his skills from watching YouTube videos and from books. But he says, “If someone isn’t familiar with spirits and liqueurs, enrolling in an institute is a good idea. Also skills involving molecular mixology and flair bartending are best learnt under a professional training. One thing however remains crucial; you need to have the passion.”

Stir Academy of Bartending, Mumbai
Industry veteran, Shatbhi Basu is behind Stir Academy of Bartending in Mumbai. It started out as an official meeting point for bartenders but was extended as an academy. The academy began in 1999 and has been producing bartenders who are the pride of a bar.
Courses: The curriculum includes classic and popular cocktails as well as product knowledge, flair, laws and licensing, and, bar and beverage management. Each class comprises of minimum 12 and maximum 20 students and goes on for 6-7 months with 3 classes of 3 hours each per week.

Cocktails & Dreams Bar and Beverage Studio, Delhi
Yangdup Lama has established himself as an important face in India’s bartending world and as an extension he set up the Cocktails & Dreams Bar and Beverage Studio in 2003 which trains young enthusiasts to take up a life behind the bar. With also a live bar open for consumers in Gurgaon, trainees also get a real-time experience of bartending.
Courses: A three months extensive course which covers not just basics of bartending but also management and catering and wine knowledge. There are 36 classes conducted over 3 months with 3 classes of 3 hours each in a week.
They also have a one month refresher course meant for professionals to brush up on their skills.

Tulleeho Bartending Academy, Bangalore
Based out of Bangalore, pan-India beverage management company Tulleeho offers two courses in bartending. The classes cover flair, mixology session powered by practical sessions and audio-visual aids.
Certificate Course in Professional Bartending – In 36 modules covered in 4 days a week for 2 months will train you in beverage knowledge, management, wine basics, menu planning and marketing. You also have the opportunity to work part-time at a real bar.
Weekend Mix Master – In 12 hours spread over 2 days you learn cocktail basics and quintessential cocktails from spirits like, Tequila, Gin, Vodka, White Rum, flavor profiling amongst other things.
