5 Wine Fails to Avoid
Experimenting is a good thing, generally. Some of the best things in life have been discovered or invented because of experimentation, including wines. But it is equally important not to get carried away.
Our Wine Fail list will keep you wary of things NOT to do when it comes to wines.
1. Never keep wine in a freezer
It is tempting especially if you are in a rush but there is an equally high possibility to forget it there. A frozen bottle of wine loses its charm not to mention it might even burst. Plan ahead and keep it in the refrigerator for an hour or so instead. Otherwise put it in an ice bucket with 50:50 ratios of ice and water; this is the fastest way to chill wine.
2. A wine bottle is not a cocktail shaker
While wines do need time to open up, it is a big no-no to shake a bottle of wine to accelerate the process. If it is a bottle lying in your cellar for a while, chances are there will be sediments in it and shaking the bottle will get all of that muddled back in the wine. Use a decanter or a wine aerator instead.
3. Never fill a glass to the top
We’ve covered the fact numerous times that wine needs to breathe or aerate and it needs space for that. If you fill your glass to the brim, there is no opportunity for the wine to do so; this is apart from the fact that it is also considered uncouth.
4. To drink or not to
To spit or not to – we often find ourselves in a predicament when we have so many great wines to taste around us. Getting drunk on good wine is quite a waste. The only way to deal with that is to pace yourself with each glass of wine and always, always remember to hydrate.
5. Don’t be a wine hillbilly
Avoid holding your glass of wine from the bowl. The long stem of the glass has a purpose – it helps maintain the temperature of the wine as well as maintains the clarity of the glass. You can showcase your wine tasting skills (read sucking air while tasting wines) for proper tasting. Spare your friends and acquaintances of the sound effects; it can be quite off putting.
