4 Cocktails for an Awesome Holi
Festival of colors, Holi, is upon us. Marking the arrival of spring-summer, it is one of those few festivals in India where people are out on the streets celebrating and making merry.
This year, make Holi even more merry with these amazing cocktails!
Watermelon Gin Fizz
This is perfect summer time drink. Gin and Tonic is an unbeatable classic and watermelon just adds fruity freshness to the drink.
60 ml Gin
130 ml Tonic Water
10 ml Lime Juice
45 ml Fresh Watermelon juice
3-4 watermelon chunks
Pour all ingredients except tonic water in a tall glass. Muddle properly and top the glass with tonic water. Use a slice of watermelon or a lime rind as a garnish.
Whisky Spiked Thandai
The quintessential Holi drink – Thandai – literally means a coolant. Bhaang is the traditional and popular intoxicating adulterant in this milk and spice drink but if the after effects worry you too much then try this alternative!
A lot of restaurants and bars have tried versions of a Thandai cocktail using various spirits for the drink; vodka, gin and whisky are the popular ones. We’re sticking to whisky. There is a ton of spices and aromas in a Thandai, only a strong spirit can stand out in the menagerie. Whisky is also a natural choice with milk; think cream liqueurs.
60 ml Whisky
180 ml Milk
A bottle of Thandai Mix
Make Thandai as per instructions on the bottle. In a shaker add whisky to the Thandai with ice and shake well.
Pour in a tall stainless steel glass or julep cup and garnish with slivers of almonds and cinnamon stick.
Pepper Bloody Mary
A good Bloody Mary always hits the spot, it is a yummy liquid snack. This version will take a little bit of prep work, but the good thing is that you can make a complete batch before the fun and frolic begins. These measurements are designed to serve 6-7 people easily.
1 Red Bellpepper
1 Yellow Bellpepper
1 litre Tomato Juice
500 ml Vodka
170 ml Lemon Juice
Salt and Pepper
Roast the peppers in an oven or on a grill till it is slightly charred. Remove the skin, cut and remove the seeds of the peppers. Make a puree of the pepper in a food processor or blender.
In a large jug pour in the pepper puree, tomato juice, vodka and lemon juice alongwith ice and stir till its mixed. Now add the flavorings (Worcestershire Sauce, Tabasco Sauce, Salt and Pepper) according to your taste.
Use thin slices of pepper & olives as garnish.
This another easy drink and even though it uses rum, it won’t have you sweating buckets in the sun
1 Thin Slice of Chilli
60 ml Dark or Aged Rum
10 ml Simple Syrup
10 ml Lime Juice
10 ml Orange Juice
Dash of Bitters
In a shaker, add the chilli slice with rum and muddle gently. Add ice and the remaining ingredients and shake till the drink has chilled completely.
Strain into a Martini and garnish with Orange peel.
