10 Must Have Bar Snacks In The City
If you are at a bar nursing a glass in your hands, how can something to nibble on be far behind. While your bar may or may not leave you satisfied with the drink they serve, they will more often than not serve up some reasonable bar food and snacks. We spent a lot of time tasting around the city of Mumbai to bring you our list of must have bar snacks.
Patatas Bravas at Arola (V)
Michelin Star Chef Sergi Arola and his Commander at the Mumbai outpost Manuel Oliveira have captured the hearts of Mumbai by this avant garde version of the popular Spanish tapas dish. Inch long cylinders of potatoes hollowed out to be filled with the savory tomato sauce and topped with garlic aioli. It tastes just as good as it looks.
Pulled Pork Nachos at Jamjar Diner (N)
Most restaurants struggle to get the balance right between the toppings, tortilla chips and the condiments on a nachos dish. So imagine our amazement when we found this plate of nachos with generous serving of succulent and flavoursome pulled pork along with fresh sour cream and beans.
Fish Tacos at Ellipsis (N)
Ellipsis has created a name for itself thanks to the experimental and contemporary style of food that Chef Kelvin Cheung plates up. (Read more about him here) Everyday there is something new on the menu, but the very practical chef leaves the popular favorites as is, and Ellipsis’ Fish Tacos are one of them, tempura battered fish served with guacamole on corn tortilla. What’s even better is that Ellipsis serves excellent cocktails.
Chana in China at The Press Club (V)
This is the ultimate Chindian dish with nothing haute about it and boy is it yummy! Boiled black chickpeas doused sautéd with capsicum and doused in Soy sauce based gravy is good enough reason to be friends with someone in the burgeoning media industry who has a membership at the club. It goes exceedingly well with the nominally priced drinks as well.
Boneless Chicken Wings at The Table (N)
No bar food menu is complete without chicken wings, but chicken wings without bones? That’s what dreams are made of – no messy hands, no cave man tactics to ingest the meat. The meat has been very dextrously pressed together and cut to form cubes which are then fried and served with soy, lime and spring onion. The Table also has one of the best bar menu’s in the city, for this month has three Hipcask cocktails.
Okra Kurkure at He Said She Said (V)
This one has been recommended by a follower of ours. Okra or Lady Finger does not have a very strong fan following thanks to the slime element. It is also an unusual sighting on a bar menu and it is refreshing to see that the vegetarians have more options. Fried till its crisp there is no slime to be worried about and it is flavored simply making it a great munchy.
Molagapodi Prawns at Copa (N)
Gunpowder and onion laced King prawns which are then pan-fried are quite the revelation at this lounge bar in Juhu. Gunpowder for those who are wary of the name is the other name for the popular South Indian dry chutney Molagapodi.
Baked Spinach and Potato Dip at The Big Kahuna (V)
The Big Kahuna, erstwhile Trader Vic’s Mai Tai Lounge, has a huge fan following of their Baked Spinach and Potato Dip. It is made of garlic cream spinach, potato, parmesan crust served with grilled pita and crostini. Sounds like a good balance between health and indulgence.
Basket of Ultimate Fries at Gadda da Vida (V)
What is not to like about potatoes! They are by far the most popular starch based ingredient and its versatility knows no bounds. And so the joy and happiness manifolds when a massive basket of potato wedges, French fries and Suzie Qs arrive on your table. This one is meant to last you a while.
Beer Battered Onion Rings at Woodside Inn and Woodside – All Day Bar & Eatery (V)
These onion rings fried crisp and light in a beer batter are like no other, they have a very subtle flavor which you can punch with the flavored mayonnaise. These rings almost melt in your mouth making them the perfect accompaniment to that pint of ale you’ve ordered. A word of advice, don’t let them go cold, they don’t taste the same.
